God Shaped Hole
God-Shaped Hole - Tiffanie DeBartolo
It seems fitting to start this review with a quote by the unique, phenomenal, beautiful artist that inspired this story - Jeff Buckley. The words he used to express the way he felt about his music also describe what I search when I'm reading a book or listening to music and the way 'God-Shaped Hole' by Tiffanie DeBartolo makes me feel."Sometimes the most consequential moments in my life originate from a state of completely witless human autopilot." It's a crave for something real that leads Beatrice 'Trixie' Jordan to Jacob Grace, a writer, a dreamer, someone who changes her life forever."...I caught sight of his eyes. (...) I sensed in them a splash of irony, too; a proud acceptance of the fact that life can be a bitch sometimes, that some people feel things to deeply. I always felt like that myself, that I didn't marry into the landscape of the human world like others did, that I was on the outside looking in. (...) I'd never seen that look on another face before, had never identified it in another person...."So, they meet..."What do you say we mark this day - the day we met - by buying each other a record?"

Shark Out of Water (Grab Your Pole, #3) - Jenn Cooksey
After that 'fade to black'/excruciating cliffhanger at the end of 'The Other Fish in the Sea', I was anxious to read this book and get some answers, so of course I was hooked right from the start. 'Shark Out of Water' was highly emotional, I loved it - I think this is my favorite book of the series. All the characters are fantastic and I loved the multiple POV approach.Without giving too much away, here are some highlights of this reading experience:Tristan and Jeff bromanceLady Amalthea But it's not only laughs...wise words...Tristan *swoon*Music or no music?Shuflle or no shuffle? There are so many great moments in this book...That said, the 'Grab your Pole' series is, without a doubt, one of the best YA series I've ever read, you are transported back to high school while reading it, the writing is awesome and it's FUNNY.AS.HELLSo, am I excited for book 4? hell yeah! Phineas and Ferb french cousin agrees with me...I just hope Jillian isn't recruited by the CIA in the meantime.

Unteachable
Unteachable - Leah Raeder

I see the lights every night. It seems like the whole world has figured out how to be happy, but no one’s letting me in on the secret.

image

‘Unteachable’ by Leah Raeder is not your common teacher-student romance. What makes this book so different from the others?

One of the elements that differentiate this story is the heroine, Maise O’Malley .

image

She's not some 18-year-old, naïve, whiny female character(thankgod!). Maise, is someone who had a tough upbringing, her mother is a drug-addict and her father abandoned her, that's one of the reasons that leads her to sleep with older men, like she so eloquently explains:

Thanks, Dad, for leaving a huge void in my life that Freud says has to be filled with d*ck.

image

I love her, she’s pretty straightforward about her choices, she’s one of the most interesting characters I’ve read lately: complex, funny, sarcastic and defiant. To some, she might come across as arrogant, but as we get to ‘know’ her, we understand that attitude as a defense mechanism. Her internal monologues are priceless, they fit her personality perfectly and the humour is smart - a breath of fresh air.

Great character development and that applies to the secondary characters in this story - like Wesley, a fellow movie buff that becomes her friend, despite her initial stand-off attitude. no love triangle

image

So, when we first meet Maise, she’s at a carnival in her Lolita/seductress persona and that’s where she meets Evan aka Mr.Wilke

image

There are moments, when you're getting to know someone, when you realize something deep and buried in you is deep and buried in them, too. It feels like meeting a stranger you've known your whole life.

image

They are undeniably attracted to each other so things escalate pretty quickly, but Maise is caught off guard with the immediate connection she feels with Evan, that goes beyond her control:

image

Something was spiralling wildly inside of me, more and more out of control. My usual surgical approach to sex wouldn’t work here. He kept confusing it with these tender, adoring gestures. Just fuck me, I wanted to say. But I didn’t want him to just fuck me. I wanted this to keep going on forever, never running out of clothes or new places to be touched.

I think the only similarity this story has with the other teacher-student romances is exactly that moment when Maise starts her senior year and (surprise, surprise) Evan is her new ‘Film Studies’ teacher: Mr. fucking Wilke

One of the things I liked about this story was the way the author developed the relationship between Evan and Maise, it’s not overly dramatic, but it is intense both emotionally and physically and for all the naughty readers out there (myself included) it’s insanely HOT (I'm not exaggerating.)

image

Steamy Snippet He fucked me slowly, his eyes open, on my face. My fingers and toes curled and then sprang loose. The funny thing was that his kiss had felt like fucking me, and his fucking me felt like being kissed, everywhere, every bit of my body unbearably warm and buzzing.

image

It’s not a hypocritical approach and they aren’t constantly trying to justify the situation with fake morals or trying to embellish their relationship with the idea of undying love. Actually, at some point they acknowledge the thrill of the forbidden/taboo and its influence on their relationship, that was refreshing.

‘Unteachable’ is a page turner, the plot is really engaging, and while I was reading it I felt dared by the author. I became anxious at some points creating theories about what would happen next (failing miserably BTW) and in the end I was pleasantly surprised, on that note, in my opinion, the ending was perfect.

image

That said, the writing is AMAZING , I’m really, really looking forward to read more from this talented author. Finally, I think this book has the most honest approach I’ve ever read of the teacher-student romance and it is one of the best New Adult books I've read so far .

‘Unteachable’ is unique, funny, unconventional, intense, HOT, bold, realistic - the ultimate ‘anti-cliché’ student-teacher romance.

So, of course I recommend it, but don’t expect rainbows or unicorns (only a little fucker pony).Read it with an open mind, tell your preconceived notions to take a hike and expect the unexpected.

Left Drowning
Left Drowning - Jessica Park
'Left Drowning' is an intense and meaningful reading experience. It captivates the reader's attention right from the beginning, that's when we meet 'Blythe McGuire'. I have mastered the art of melancholy. She's not a regular 21-year-old college student, she's someone whose life was shattered when her parents died in a tragic accident. She's profoundly sad, using alcohol as an escape and a way to numb the pain, she's disappointed in herself, lonely and trying to mend a fractured relationship with her brother.

2 StarsThat gif translates how I feel after reading this book. I'm going through a biker read withdrawal and this book’s premise looked interesting so I gave it a try, but I really struggled through it and almost DNF. I think the relationship between ‘Braxxon’ and ‘Winter’ was too sudden, some elements seemed really forced and I was prepared for the rape, drugs and violent scenes that are common in biker books, but I did not like the approach the author gave to it - it didn’t make sense to me. That’s why I have to rate this 2 stars, one star is for the writing and the other is for Winter’s gummy bear addiction. Finally, I have to say that since the ‘Undeniable’ series by Madeline Sheehan that I cannot find a biker book that can compare to those. I liked 'Reaper’s Property', 'Motorcycle Man' but not as much as I loved 'Undeniable' and ‘Unbeautifully’, so maybe I’m ruined for other MC books? I don't know!I think, in the meantime, I’ll re-read ‘Undeniable’/watch SOA and just ride…This is my honest opinion, other people here on GR loved it so if you want to, see for yourself.

Frigid - J. Lynn, Jennifer L. Armentrout
❄ The ultimate friends-to-lovers winter wonderland ❄Meet Sydney and KylerSydney is a regular girl, a little bit of a control freak but she’s also really funny - an adorable and likeable character. Kyler is a loveable-player and like Syd says: "Kyler… yeah, he put that ‘oo’ in swoon." They are childhood best friends, Sydney is deeply in love with Kyler but, she hides her feelings and has to watch his ‘player’ ways, while Kyler has Sydney on a pedestal and tries to rationalize and deny his feelings for her. They are stuck in the friend-zone… but its winter break, and these two are about to go to a ski-resort with some friends, meanwhile, with some help from mother-nature…...there is a snowstorm, their friends can’t get to the sky resort and Sydney and Kyler are: Alone, Together. Sooner or later, they have to deal with the feelings they have for each other and while their relationship develops to something more, there are plenty of 'stomach in knots', awkward situations and misunderstandings, but eventually, there are also some sweet momentsBut don’t think this is all just snowflakes and marshmallows, there are some surprising HOT moments (that could melt an iceberg) provided by 'Teacher' KylerAnd along the way, there are other circumstances that really keep you engaged in the story. That said, this book is angsty from the first page, it’s a page-turner and, as usual with this author, the writing is excellent. It’s a wonderful reading experience, I only wish it was snowing outside and I was sipping hot cocoa while reading it - that would be bliss ;)That said, if you are a “romangsty” addict who loves friends-to-lovers stories then ‘Frigid’ should be your next read! ❄Loved it! Read it!❄ ❄This was an awesome Buddy Read with my darling Kit Cat ❄♥ MUAH

Ambrosia (Book Boyfriend, #2) - Erin Noelle
4 Butterflies Yesterday, I was reading another book but I wasn’t really into it, so I decided to finish that one later and start another. While I was choosing what to read next, I thought: Screw the cliffhanger, I miss Ash, I’m not going to wait for the 3rd book, let’s read ‘Ambrosia’! Oh Ash *swoon*The next time I kiss you, it’s forever. I won’t let go again.Let me start by saying that I have mixed feelings about this series, I remember that when I read ‘Metamorphosis’, in the beginning of the book I wasn’t really connecting with the story (mostly because of Scarlett) but I didn’t give up and caught myself really engrossed in it and ended up loving it. Despite my unquestionable support to TEAM ASH, I think it makes perfect sense for Scarlett to be with Mason when she returns. In the beginning of this book, I really thought she was more mature, but of course I was wrong, and what happened with Max just proved that, she’s supposed to help him cope with Evie’s loss, but not that way (and no, you can’t blame the tequila!) Scarlett *grrrr*After reading ‘Ambrosia’, I have a Love-Hate relationship with it, the writing is really good and I love the story (and Ash) but Scarlett really frustrates me and I think she really needs to grow up. The thing is, despite my feelings towards Scarlett, the story is really engaging and it was great to read Ash and Mason’s POV, especially Ash - he’s really mature and more than redeems himself in this book, the problem is, I think Mason is going to play the guilt card in the next book and I don’t think that things are going to be easy for Ash so, I predict a lot of angst. But then again, with this series, we never know what to expect, I gave it 4 stars exactly because of that surprise factor and also because of the conflicted emotions this story provokes in me and how engaging it is (4AM and I was still reading it), I could not put this book down! That said, I really hope that Scarlett changes, really, she needs another metamorphosis in the third book so she can, finally, be with Ash!That’s your reminder that I love you. Always and Forever. You’re my Psyche and I’m your Eros

Pulse (Collide, #2) - Gail McHugh
5 ‘Gavin Blake, I miss you already’ StarsWarning: minor spoilers + major swooning over ‘Mr. Tall, Dark, and F*ckable Handsome’Magnificent!!!! I’m still trying to overcome all the different feelings that this amazing story evoked in me. After ‘Collide’, I expected another intense, deeply emotional reading, what I didn’t expect was to not be able to keep up with the torrent of emotions this book provoked in me while reading it! I think ‘emotional roller-coaster’ might be an understatement to describe the phenomenal reading experience that is 'Pulse'.After the events that led to that painful ending of ‘Collide’, ‘Gavin’ and ‘Emily’ are both really hurt, Emily has finally left 'Dillon', but of course that the he doesn’t let her go that easily, which leads to a really painful and emotional scene (around 5% I was shedding my first tear). While 'Gavin' is away, 'Emily' is heartbroken, feeling numb and starting to lose hope, the thing is, she’s really strong in this book, she’s a fighter, and one of the things that I really liked is that she doesn’t sit around and wait, she goes after Gavin, and that was refreshing. So, she finds him (cue the angst) but their reunion is really difficult and distressing. But, when we are least expecting, all the awesomeness that is ‘Gavin Blake’ reappears (cue the stupid grin on my face) and that leads to some of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read (cue the panty-melting)All the characters are great, I love 'Emily', 'Olivia' is hilarious but, I’d like to take this moment to share that, after experiencing the ‘shmexy’/‘king of swoon’ that is ‘Gavin Blake’, for the second time …When I look at you, I feel like I’m looking at the other half of myself. You’ve filled the empty space in my soul, and because of that, you’re a Goddess to me. That’s the way I’m always going to treat you. For the rest of your life. I promise you that. (cue the butterflies) I owed you a bottle cap since the last few times I drank, I forgot to give you one. I’m sorry. (cue the warm fuzzies) You know I’m inhaling every inch of your body after everyone goes to sleep, right? (cue the panty dropping)And I could go on and on and on, Oh Dear......I Know that he will ruin a lot of male characters for me, that's for sure! Gavin is sublime!I have to say that the way the author develops the relationship between 'Gavin and Emily' in this book is absolutely brilliant. I would also like to acknowledge the way the author portraits the impact of Emily’s background and also the abusive relationship with 'Dillon' and how that affects her and the relationship with 'Gavin', it’s a really sensitive and flawless approach. At first, their reunion is not easy, there’s a lot of insecurities but, considering all they’ve been through that makes perfect sense, on top of that, they also have to deal with the ‘Deputy Dillhole’ so there’s a lot of uncertainty on their path. But the chemistry and sexy/playful banter between the two of them is still amazing and there are a lot of heart-warming momentsWe were written for one another, and I wouldn't change one line in our romance novel. The good, the bad, the in between. It's ours. We own it.'Emily and Gavin' face a lot of complications and challenges but, it’s a beautiful journey, ‘Pulse’ is an extraordinary conclusion to this story - enthralling, surprising, passionate, heart-mending, highly emotional …it’s all you can ask for and more! Beautiful story, excellent writing, a remarkable debut - I’m really looking forward to read more from Gail McHugh! Our past is imperfect but our future’s breathtaking.

4.5 'give me a bottle cap Gavin' Stars LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! I've read 'Collide' one time already, but since the sequel was just released I felt the need to re-read it and like the first time, I caught myself really enraptured by this story. It's difficult to translate all its itensity, but let's do a really quick recap: In 'Collide' we meet 'Emily',She recently lost her mother and moved to New York to be close to her boyfriend 'Dillon'. At first he seems like the perfect boyfriend, supportive and loyal, but first impressions can be deceiving...So, 'Emily' starts a new job and she meets 'Gavin Blake' aka "Mr. Tall, Dark, and Fuckable Handsome", rich and powerful, she thinks he is a player, but like in Damien's case, appearances can be deceptiveThere's an instant connection between Emily and Gavin, but of course she avoids and rejects all his advances, the problem is, Gavin and Dillon are friends (not best friends but, they have a friendly relationship) which means that it's impossible for Gavin and Emily to avoid each other... As time passes by, the feelings they have for each other just intensifies. Emily is really conflicted and she fights her feelings for Gavin who is described as "her worst nightmare and her wettest dream", but "Mr. Tall, Dark, and F*ckable Handsome" is relentless and the chemistry between the two of them is off the charts, so the sexual tension in this book has epic proportions and GOD I have to say that 'Gavin Blake' is P.E.R.F.E.C.T., really, just see for yourself! So all the sexual tension can only lead to...OH Dear, just be prepare to be blown away by 'Gavin Blake', he will leave you breathless...Every part of you was made for me. Your lips were made to kiss mine, your eyes were made to wake up to me looking at you in my bed every morning, and your f***ing tongue was made to roll my name off of it. I am more certain of us than I'm certain that I require oxygen to breathe. But when we think that they might finally be together, there's a series of misunderstandings and awful decisions that only lead to heartbreak...I remember that this book was intense before re-reading it, but I guess that's an understatement for all the emotional turmoil you go through while reading 'Collide', the angst in this book is out of this world!!! So, if you haven't read it yet, do it NOW! It's really, really good and the writing is excellent, but keep in mind that the ending of book 1 will leave you desperate for more, so make sure that you have 'Pulse' ready and read on!

Axel (Corps Security, #1) - Harper Sloan
'Axel' grabs your attention right from the very first page, it's intense from the beginning, that's when we first meet Isabelle West, our heroine, she's trapped in a violent marriage living in constant fear, she's hopeless and like so many other unfortunate situations like this, one day the abuse hits an extreme.Flash forward two years...After leaving her abusive husband, with the support from her friends she is trying to move on with her life but she's far from being in a "good place" and her husband is still harassing her...I have to say that one of the things that I loved in this book is the way the author portraits the importance of friendship on Isabelle's recovery, on that note, it's also through one of her friends that someone really important from her past reappears. .. Enters "Feral", Dominant, Alpha-liscious 'Axel'... So, they meet again, but their reunion is not easy. In my opinion that is one of the elements that gives authenticity to the story, they both changed and given the circumstances, there's shock and animosity provoked by a series of misunderstandings.Their journey is not an easy one and they have to deal with some really tragic memories and overcome other complications, it's deeply emotional but not overly dramatic. There are some funny moments in it and some enjoyable banter between the two of them but when these two really get together, it's totally worth the wait: passionate, torrid, alpha-explosive.But, will this first love get a second chance? Well, that's for you to find out! So, if you haven't read it yet, don't miss the chance to read 'Axel'!Finally, I have to say that the writing is really good, great debut novel! I loved all the characters and can't wait to read the next book in this series. LOVED IT! READ IT!
